As a replacement of its namesake originally constructed in 1926, the new Edison Elementary School in Eugene, Oregon, was designed both with sensitivity to the much-beloved Pacific Northwest architecture of the original school building and with the purpose of addressing its shortcomings. The new two-story, 81,000 SF building of structural steel, CMU wall, and buckling-restrained braced frame construction nearly doubles the size of the original building while providing safe, modern and flexible learning spaces for up to 450 students. The H-shaped plan configuration, a narrow mechanical mezzanine above much of the 2nd floor, the gabled form of the roof, and a play yard tucked under the building footprint all afforded unique structural design and detailing challenges and opportunities. The $28.2 million project opened to students in the Fall of 2022.
