The modernization of Canby High School responds to the goals of Canby School District’s 2020 bond program to address safety, repair and update aging buildings, and create modern learning spaces for hands-on instruction. This $35 million project, informed by a master plan and a seismic evaluation completed by catena in early 2021, includes the careful demolition of 15,200 SF of existing structure to accommodate the addition of over 37,000 SF of new two-story construction with modern STEM instructional spaces. The new addition consists predominantly of composite structural steel with buckling restrained braced frames for lateral restraint, and it incorporates dowel-laminated timber (DLT) panels and glued-laminated timber framing above a new Commons space. The project also includes the seismic retrofit of the school’s grandstand roof using the performance-based engineering methodology of ASCE 41. The project was completed in time for the Fall 2023 term.
