This renovation of two historical buildings to house art galleries and offices connected two separate yet adjoining structures, the Daisy Kingdom Building (three stories, 28,000 square feet) and the DeSoto Building (four stories, 31,000 square feet). New shear walls and collectors were added to make the combination of the two buildings seamless. Our design concept placed concrete shear walls away from the perimeter of the building, helping to retain the historical fabric and storefront of the building. We pushed the envelope with modeled soil and foundation interaction thus reducing the size and impact of the foundation on the structure. With $5.5 million in construction costs, the project was completed in 2007 with LEED Gold certification on the DeSoto Building.
