An AIA Award winner, the Legacy Emanuel North Utility Plant is a 5,000-square-foot, one-story building completed in 2010 with $8.5 million in construction costs. This metal stud barring shear wall building with open web roof joists was conceived through a desire by Legacy Health System to maintain campus operability following a regional emergency. The building required a shell space without any interior columns in order to contain entire campus’ mechanical equipment systems within the utility plant. The design team opted to expose utilities to the public and backlight the mechanical utilities in order to view operations.
