Contractor: Lease Crutcher Lewis

North Eugene High School (NEHS) is the first new high school in the Eugene-Springfield area in more than 50 years. The new 216,000-square-foot campus replaces the old North Eugene High School with a two-story, high-quality facility built for safety, modern seismic standards, sustainability, and 21st century education. The project was completed in time for the Fall 2023 term.

Career Technical Education (CTE) is at the heart of the NEHS curriculum. The design includes flexible spaces located throughout the structure that are designed to support the CTE programming; a large library, located near the main entry, that can be used as a gathering space for the community; a centralized courtyard that serves as the communal heart of the school; a large counseling and college/career center; an independently operated health clinic; and a preschool child development center.

The lateral force-resisting system consists of Special Reinforced Concrete Masonry walls and Buckling Restrained Braced Frames. The gravity system consists of composite concrete deck over structural steel wide flange beams and girders with conventional spread footings. Long-span custom steel roof trusses remain exposed to view at the commons/cafeteria area, and supporting steel columns are filled with concrete to provide fire resistance while allowing them to remain exposed without the need for expensive intumescent paint. The two gymnasium volumes within the school were designed to a heightened seismic resiliency standard to facilitate their use as a community shelter following a major natural disaster.
