Portland State University Historic Shattuck Hall

Portland, Oregon

Owner: Portland State University

Architect: SRG Partnership, Inc.

Contractor: Howard S. Wright Construction

Originally designed as an elementary school, PSU’s Shattuck Hall is a three-story, 67,000-square-foot building that currently houses the Architecture Department. Using advanced analysis concepts of FEMA 356, catena helped the team to realize significant savings in the seismic retrofit by reducing the amount of new shear walls and eliminating the need for the massive foundation elements that were proposed by another engineer in an earlier design. With construction costs totaling $10 million, this LEED Gold certified project was completed in 2008.
